Why is your website slow? 3 tips to speed it up immediately.
You sit at your computer, click on your own website and wait. One second. Two seconds. Three... You're still staring at the white screen, or your logo has just started to load. Feel familiar?
If you're nervous, think about how a first-time visitor feels. Statistics are relentless: if a web page takes longer than 3 seconds to load, the 40% of visitors will be immediately turned back. They don't wait for your amazing design or ingenious offer to fill. They simply close the window and go to the competition.
A slow website is not just annoying, it means a concrete loss of revenue. In addition, Google also „penalises” slow sites by ranking them lower in search results.
But why is it slow? And what you can do about it today? As webmasters we see these mistakes every day. Here are the 3 most common reasons - and their solutions.
1. The Oversized Image Trap
This is the most common „killer”. You take a photo of your product with your phone, or download a beautiful stock photo, 4-5 MB in size, and upload it to the site without any changes.
The browser has to download this huge amount of data for each visitor. If you have 4 of those images on your main page, that's 20 MB of data - on mobile, that seems like an eternity.
The Solution: Never upload a „raw” image! Use image compression.
Before uploading, resize the image (a website rarely needs a photo wider than 1920 pixels).
Use modern formats (like WebP) or a plugin (like Smush or ShortPixel) that automatically compresses your images in WordPress.
2. The „Expansion Cemetery”
„How cool is this feature, I'll install it! Wow, I need this snowfall effect for Christmas!” - And you've got 40-50 plugins running under your website.
Each plugin is a new piece of code that the server must run on each page load. A lot of unnecessary or badly written extensions drastically slows down page generation.
The Solution: Have a clean-up!
Go to the control panel and look through the Extensions list.
What you don't use: Delete! (Don't just turn it off).
What you use that is not essential (e.g. that snowfall effect), think about it: is it worth slowing down?
3. The Weak „Engine” (The Repository)
This is the most awkward point, because it's the least you can do, yet it's the one that determines the speed of your site the most.
Think of it as a car. You can have the most streamlined bodywork (design) and the best fuel (content) if you have a lawnmower engine under the bonnet.
Many cheap hosting providers that use foreign or outdated technology „overcrowd” their servers. Hundreds of websites share few resources. If your neighbour's website gets traffic, yours slows down. In addition, if the server is physically far away (e.g. in America), it takes longer for the signal to reach your Hungarian customer.
The Solution: Choose professional, fast, Hungarian hosting!
At SiteMentor, after many years and dozens of websites, we have ended up with Sybell at. There is a reason why we are moving all our clients to them.
NVMe SSD technology: This is the opposite of the „lawnmower engine”. It allows lightning-fast data transfer.
Hungarian servers: For your Hungarian customers, the page will load immediately.
LiteSpeed Cache: A special technology that makes WordPress sites even faster.
If you feel like you've tried everything (images, plugins) and your site is still sluggish, then hosting is almost certainly the bottleneck.
